we decided to give comcast the small FU (small because we have to keep interwebs) and get rid of our cable. we were sick of calling them every 6 months to threaten canceling the service so we could get some new cable “deal”.
so we went and bought a mac mini today and installed boxee on it a KERPOW! awesomeness. i mean total happy dance freak out awesomeness.
we tried plex first – it was beautiful and easy to navigate but couldn’t get the netflix plugin to work. netflix was one of the reasons we went with a mini rather than appletv, which you can install boxee on but with no netflix. plex also doesn’t seem to have anywhere near as much action, i’m assuming because its for mac only, whereas boxee runs on 3 platforms.
but then we installed boxee and although its not as intuitive it has so many more options its just rocks socks. we have it set up to automatically start when you turn on the mini and because it has a built in keyboard for any text input we can run it with no attached keyboard. you do need an apple remote though but i had one that came with my macbook laying around. if you have an iphone or ipod touch there’s a boxee app that acts just like the remote as well.
now that we have it set up we’re kicking ourselves for keeping cable this long. i mean, boxee plays hulu, netflix, a ton of other sources and every bit of media we already have… so now all i need to do is go to comcast and throw the digital box through the store window with a ‘cancel my goddamn cable’ note and we’re all set.
yay!
After a long month or so of me trying to get Azuki well and back to his normal happy self he decided it was too much for him.
